I think there is a lot to be said that is positive about the theory of evolution. If we presume that it is true that God created the universe and God, being spiritual, has no physical body, then his work of creating must have been done mentally. He merely willed into existence whatever he wanted. Prior to creation, there was nothing physical in existence. All physical matter and energy came into existence simply because God willed it into existence.
Suppose I were there to observe creation. There is really nothing to see until the physical universe actually begins to form, I would be able to see only the physical matter. If the “big Bang” supposition is correct, I would observe the big bang. Moving forward into time, if I were to observe the origin of life and the emergence of different plants and animals, I’m sure I would observe their emergence almost exactly as the theory of evolution proposes. I would never be able to observe the creator because, being spiritual, there is nothing about the creator that is visible to the eye. I could see only the physical things he creates as they emerge. I think the theory of evolution is a very effective way to come to terms with how I would observe the origin of everything in the physical universe if I were able to observe it.
But it is possible to completely misunderstand the origin of the physical universe. If some proponents of the theory of evolution argue that the theory does away with the supposition that there exists a God, and they propose that everything simply arose from nothing all by itself or that the physical universe is eternal, I would have very big problems with that. I would be tempted to reject the theory of evolution because of that, but I think my rejection would be a big mistake. I should pursue truth because I think God will endorse all human efforts to discover truth, and I don’t want to be left out on this pursuit.
There are two worlds I am immersed in: the physical world and the spiritual world. I need to come to terms with both worlds. One can be investigated through observation and experimentation; the other can only be approached through faith in the testimony of someone who knows.
