John, the Evangelist, claims that God is Love. He operates on Love. Everything about him is love. I’m trying to understand how that could be. I think, before God created the universe, he existed by himself – forever. He always existed. He doesn’t have a beginning. Before he created the universe, there was no one but him. It stands to reason that he was happy with at peace with himself, that he never did anything that caused the slightest conflict within himself. Then why would he not love himself? He must have been supremely happy. It must be as John says. He is Love!
I am told that God created me out of love. He wants me to come to know him, to love him, to serve him in this life and be happy with him forever in heaven. He created the whole universe for that reason, for me and all the others he created. The universe is huge, but there are six billion human beings on Earth right now. Fifty to one hundred years from now, there will be another generation of human beings and yet another generation of human beings fifty to one hundred years beyond that. In the past, ever since the first humans, there must have been tens of billions of human beings that preceded us. So the universe, as big as is, is probably not too big.
Staggering: how big God is! How can he keep track of all this stuff? I’ve been told that since he is God, he is infinite. I now realize how big infinite is. God created everything. He must be big enough to deal with it. I’m told he wants an intimate, personal relationship with every single person he created, with me also. He wants me to love him with my whole heart, my whole mind, my whole soul, all my strength, and of course, he will respond to that by flooding me with his own love.
Heaven must be an exceptionally happy experience. I would love to wind up there.
