I’m very much against abortion, but sometimes I think the arguments of those against abortion fall on deaf ears. Certainly being killed while still in the womb is a tragic experience, but to focus entirely on the tragic interruption of life seems to miss a major point, and those who are pro-abortion are not swayed by this argument anyway.
Actually, when one thinks about it, why would God permit such a huge loss of life all over the world? Some of these unborn could have grown up into exemplary persons, a credit to their nation and a comfort to others. But, of course, some of them could have accepted the presumptions of their elders and, themselves chose to accept abortion or some other departure from God’s ways.
Dying so young when they could not do the slightest thing offensives to God would make them totally innocent when they leave this life. They never disobeyed God, but, of course, they were never tested. But they do have something precious in God’s sight: they bear the wounds inflicted on them because God was yet not ready to put an enforced end to all rebellion against him. God is still waiting for those opposed to him to realize their error and surrender and ask forgiveness. This was the mission of Jesus Christ: to endure death rather than condemn because he is hoping for repentance. He was like a lamb led to the slaughter, like someone who doesn’t know why he is being slaughtered. Of course, he is also God, so he must know.
But those aborted do not know. If you are looking for victims of sin who really resemble lambs led unknowingly to the slaughter, here they are. God exposed them to such grief, being cut to pieces within the womb, the pieces being harvested for the profit of medicinal value by people who are aware that God commanded them not to kill, but they do it anyway. God has every right to destroy those evildoers on the spot, but the mission of Jesus, the woman’s seed, is to tolerate evil in order to save. He uses these young children (also the woman’s seed) in his mission to save.
So here are these millions of unborn, entering the next life, untried, untested, seemingly with nothing to offer God for their brief time in this life. But actually, they do have something to offer. They are marked with the wounds of the Lamb, and they had no idea why they were slaughtered until they arrived before God.
It is because God was willing to sacrifice them that we survivors are still here. They have an identity with Jesus the Savior that few adults will ever have.
